The four parts of a custom table pad

1. The dense fiberboard core — where the heat protection lives

This is the heart of the pad and the part doing the real work. The core is a dense, rigid fiberboard that shields your table from heat up to 550°F. That's what stands between a hot platter straight from the oven and your wood finish. A common misconception is that the vinyl surface is what protects against heat — it isn't. The vinyl is the finish you see; the core is the insulation you don't. That's why a thin, flexible cover with no real core inside offers almost no heat protection, no matter what the top is made of.

2. The vinyl top — clean, durable, easy to wipe

The top surface is a washable vinyl that takes daily life — meals, spills, homework, holidays — and wipes clean with a damp cloth. It gives the pad an attractive, finished look and stands up to years of use without staining or wearing through.

3. The soft velvet bottom — protects the finish underneath

The underside is a soft velvet that rests gently against your tabletop. This is what keeps the pad from scratching or sliding around on the wood. It's a small detail that makes a big difference: a pad with a rough or slick bottom can mar a finish over time, while a proper velvet backing protects it.

4. Hidden magnets — a seamless, flat surface

On larger tables the pad comes in sections, and those sections connect with magnets concealed inside the pad. There's nothing to clip, line up, or fuss with — the pieces simply lock together and the magnets stay hidden beneath the surface, so the pad lays flat and looks like one continuous top with no exposed hardware touching your table.

Why it's 1/2" thick (and when it's thicker)

The standard pad is a half-inch thick — enough core to deliver real heat protection while staying light and easy to lift. For certain configurations, like a square or rectangular pad built to sit on a round table, we use a thicker 3/4" core so the corners stay supported and don't bend over the edge. The right thickness depends on your table, and it's something we sort out when we build your quote.

How sections work on larger tables

Smaller tables are often a single piece or two. As tables get longer, the pad is divided into more sections so it's easy to handle, store, and place — the number of sections scales with the length of the table rather than being a fixed count. A long banquet-style table simply comes in more pieces than a small breakfast table. With the hidden magnets connecting them, more sections doesn't mean a less seamless surface.
