How to Remove Scratches from a Wood Dining Table

First — Assess the Damage

Not all scratches are the same. The fix depends on how deep the scratch goes into the wood.

Surface scratches — these only affect the finish coat, not the wood itself. Usually appear as light, thin lines that catch the light.

Medium scratches — these penetrate through the finish and slightly into the wood. You can feel them with your fingernail.

Deep gouges — these cut through the finish and deep into the wood fiber. Require more significant repair.

Surface Scratch Fix — Walnut or Olive Oil

For very light surface scratches, the simplest fix is a walnut. Break a walnut in half and rub the meat of the nut directly along the scratch. The natural oils darken and temporarily fill the scratch. Let it sit for 5 minutes and buff with a soft cloth.

Alternatively, mix equal parts olive oil and white vinegar and rub into the scratch with a soft cloth. This works well on light scratches in darker wood finishes.

Medium Scratch Fix — Furniture Markers or Wax Sticks

Furniture repair markers are available at any hardware store in a range of wood tones. Choose one that matches your table's finish and draw along the scratch. Wipe away excess immediately.

Wax repair sticks work similarly — melt slightly with your finger and fill the scratch, then buff smooth. These work particularly well on deeper scratches that you can feel.

Always test on an inconspicuous area first — under the table or at a corner — before applying to a visible scratch.

Deep Gouge Fix — Wood Filler

Deep gouges require wood filler paste matched to your wood tone. Clean the area, apply filler with a putty knife, let dry completely, sand smooth with fine grit sandpaper, and touch up with matching stain or furniture marker.
